FastMed Urgent Care Spotlights National Don’t Fry Day For Skin Cancer Awareness
Friday May 22 Promotes Skin Cancer Prevention as Memorial Day Summer Season Kicks Off
May 20, 2015 Gilbert, NC – With National Don’t Fry Day this Friday, May 22 leading into Memorial Day weekend and summertime, FastMed Urgent Care, the second largest independent urgent care network in the U.S. and the largest in its chosen markets of Arizona and North Carolina, is encouraging their patients to protect themselves and their families from sunburn this summer.
“Each year, FastMed’s 87 clinic locations treat patients who have been over exposed to the sun,” said Michael P. Dunn, MD, President and Chief Medical Officer for FastMed Urgent Care in Arizona. “It not only gets in the way of their summer fun but it can pose significant short and long-term health risks. Sun overexposure damages skin, causes premature aging and can lead to skin cancer. At FastMed, we encourage our patients to take basic precautions to ensure that summer fun isn’t interrupted by painful sunburn.”
The National Council on Skin Cancer Prevention explains that no single step can provide perfect protection from overexposure to UV radiation, so they recommend following as many of the following tips as possible:
- Do Not Burn or Tan
- Seek Shade
- Wear Sun-Protective Clothing
- Generously Apply Sunscreen
- Use Extra Caution Near Water, Snow, and Sand
- Get Vitamin D Safely
The Council sums it up by encouraging summertime revelers to “Slip! Slop! Slap!...and Wrap when you’re outdoors — slip on a shirt, slop on broad spectrum sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher, slap on a wide-brimmed hat, and wrap on sunglasses.”
