You’re out in the sun, running around, having a ball, when suddenly … you don’t feel so well. You’re sick, dizzy, clammy and confused. Your summertime fun just turned less entertaining.

It’s possible that you’re suffering from heat exhaustion or dehydration. Both of these conditions can be dangerous if left untreated. FastMed Urgent Care can help you understand the symptoms of both, and what to do about them.  

Heat Exhaustion Symptoms and Treatment

  • Cool, moist skin, even in the heat
  • Goose bumps when in the heat
  • Exhaustion
  • Weakness
  • Dizziness
  • Faintness
  • Mental confusion
  • Rapid pulse
  • Weak pulse
  • Low blood pressure
  • Cramps
  • Nausea
  • Headache

Dehydration Symptoms and Treatment

  • Extreme thirst, especially with a dry mouth or swollen tongue
  • Exhaustion
  • Weakness
  • Dizziness
  • Faintness
  • Mental confusion
  • Heart palpitations
  • Dark, discolored urine
  • Decreased urine

If you’ve been out in the heat and experience any of these symptoms, you should:

  • Stop all activity.
  • Rest in a cool, shaded place.
  • Drink water and/or sports drinks to rehydrate.
  • Remove any extra clothing.
  • Bathe your wrists, ankles and neck in cool water.

If your symptoms do not improve after one hour, see a doctor.

The symptoms of both dehydration and heat exhaustion can become severe. Call a doctor if you experience: 

  • Increased or constant vomiting for more than a day.
  • A fever over 101°F.
  • Diarrhea for more than 2 days.
  • Sudden weight loss.
  • Decreased urine production.
  • Lasting or excessive confusion and weakness.

Seek emergency help if you experience: 

  • A fever higher than 103°F.
  • Extreme confusion, weakness or lethargy (i.e., cannot get out of bed.)
  • Seizures.
  • Difficulty breathing.
  • Chest or abdominal pain.
  • Unconsciousness.
  • No urine in the last 12 hours.
