Allergy relief can come in many forms. There are natural remedies for those who are concerned with side effects. Over-the-counter treatments are available for those who prefer conventional and convenient options. Doctors can also advise you on prescription options if you want something with a little more potency.

Choose Your Relief

Allergy ReliefNatural remedies: Those who prefer natural remedies have a variety to choose from when it comes to allergy relief. Some common natural allergy symptom remedies include:

  • Neti pots
  • Saline sprays
  • Local honey
  • Herbs and supplements

Antihistamines: Allergen exposure triggers a response in your immune system. This response releases a substance called histamine, which causes your blood vessels to enlarge. Histamines can also attach to other receptors and cause redness, swelling, and itching. Antihistamines block histamine from attaching to receptors and causing symptoms. Antihistamines are available as prescriptions from your doctor or in over-the-counter forms.

Decongestants: Decongestants relieve nasal congestion and can be used in conjunction with antihistamines. They are available in nasal sprays, pills, liquids, or eye drops. Nasal sprays and eye drops should only be used for a few days at a time, as extended use can actually make symptoms worse. Pill and liquids can be taken safely for longer periods of time. But decongestants have some side effects. They can raise blood pressure and are not recommended for people with hypertension or glaucoma. They can also cause irritability, insomnia, and difficulty urinating.
