Are there cold sore remedies that can cure HSV Type 1?

No. The herpes simplex virus that causes cold sores can’t be cured. Unfortunately after you get infected, the virus stays in your body for the rest of your life.  However, there are a wide range of over the counter cold sore remedies, like creams and ointments that dry up the blisters.

How did I get this?

More than 50% of people have been infected with the HSV-1 virus, usually from well-meaning kisses from relatives or romantic partners. A parent who has a cold sore often spreads the infection to his or her child this way. The disease stays dormant in all but the unlucky few who end up getting cold sores. Genetics may play a part – new studies are tracking three genes that could relate to how HSV-1 reactivates itself, causing outbreaks.

Yes. There are a number of simple and organic cold sore remedies.  Here are a few to try:

  • Ice the location as soon as it tingles.  HSV requires a warm moist environment to thrive. Cold sores usually cause a tingling sensation before a blister forms.
  • Apply salt.  Dip a damp finger in regular table salt and press for about 30 seconds, until the salt is absorbed the sore.
  • Increase your consumption of lysine.  Lysine is a protein that helps prevent cold sores. You can find it as vitamin supplement or in foods such as lean meat, eggs and dairy products.
