FastMed CMO Mevin Lee Provides Cover Story for JUCM January 2013
FastMed Urgent Care Chief Medical Officer and Journal of Urgent Care Medicine Editorial Board Member, Melvin Lee, MD, CCFP, RMC, provides the cover story for the January 2013 issue of the Journal of Urgent Care Medicine of Venous Thromboembolism in Urgent Care.
Venous Thromboembolism (VTE) is a major healthcare problem in the United States, particularly in the elderly. The prevalence of the condition increased by 33.1% between 202 and 2006 and the trend is likely to continue, given the aging of the population. Dr. Melvin Lee’s JUCM cover story reviews management of VTE in the urgent care setting, with a focus on clinical evaluation that incorporates pretest probability tools and judicious use of diagnostic tests.
Included are a review of risk factors for and the pathophysiology of VTE and recommendations on the Wells prediction rule for probability of deep venous thrombosis and for D-Dimer testing. Also provided are recommendations for inpatient and outpatient treatment, anticoagulation therapy, and long-term management of VTE.
