Brownish Discharge: Normal or Cause for Concern?
Brownish discharge can be caused by a variety of conditions, but your menstrual cycle or a vaginal infection is most often the cause.
During your menstrual cycle – When you ovulate, a follicle at the surface of the ovary ruptures to release the egg, which can cause a small amount of bleeding. If this blood flows into the vagina, it could cause a brownish discharge. Brownish discharge can also come from uterine bleeding, which can occur at other times during your cycle. After your menstrual flow ends, a brownish vaginal discharge could come from the remaining blood and tissue.
Vaginal Infections – A healthy vagina contains a natural balance of bacteria that aren’t typically harmful, but if one type of bacteria grows out of control, a condition called bacterial vaginosis could develop. Bacterial vaginosis can cause brownish discharge or discharge that is dark gray or greenish. Some sexually transmitted infections, like chlamydia or gonorrhea, can also cause vaginal discharge that could be yellow or brownish-yellow.
