During a woman’s menstrual cycle, the lining of the uterus thickens to prepare for pregnancy. Then, when you do not become pregnant, your body sheds the lining of the uterus–along with blood. A normal menstrual cycle differs among women, but it typically occur every 28 days. Occasionally, women will experience dark brown discharge or spotting outside of their regular menstrual cycle.
Most of the time, dark brown discharge is harmless, but it is possible for it to be caused by an underlying medical condition or infection. If you are experiencing abnormal dark brown discharge, visit a FastMed walk-in clinic near you.
Should Dark Brown Vaginal Discharge Concern Me?
If dark brown discharge appears near the end of your period, it is likely no cause for concern. If you frequently have dark brown discharge, it could be a sign of a medical problem or infection:
- Irregular Periods
- Uterine bleeding
Although it is uncommon, dark brown discharge could indicate a serious problem, such as a miscarriage or uterine or cervical cancer.
If you have dark brown discharge that lasts for more than a few days after your menstrual flow ends, come to FastMed to rule out the presence of a retained tampon, STI, or other type of infection. Treatment for dark brown discharge depends on the underlying cause of the problem, so you will need to be seen by a medical professional to determine the appropriate course of treatment.
