During a woman’s menstrual cycle, the lining of the uterus thickens to prepare for pregnancy. Then, when you do not become pregnant, your body sheds the lining of the uterus–along with blood. A normal menstrual cycle differs among women, but it typically occur every 28 days. Occasionally, women will experience dark brown discharge or spotting outside of their regular menstrual cycle.

Should Dark Brown Vaginal Discharge Concern Me?
If dark brown discharge appears near the end of your period, it is likely no cause for concern. If you frequently have dark brown discharge, it could be a sign of a medical problem or infection:
- Chlamydia
- Gonorrhea
- Irregular Periods
- Endometriosis
- Uterine bleeding
Although it is uncommon, dark brown discharge could indicate a serious problem, such as a miscarriage or uterine or cervical cancer.
