FastMed Can Identify Poison Ivy Symptoms

FastMed Urgent Care can help you know how to tell if you have poison ivy and what kind of treatment you need. Poison ivy is usually a red, itchy rash that can occur if you come into contact with poison ivy (similar reactions can occur if you come into contact with poison oak or sumac plants.) This rash is called allergic contact dermatitis and is caused by an allergic reaction to the sticky oil found in these plants.

Poison ivy can often be treated at home, but please seek immediate medical help if you experience any of the following symptoms:

  • Trouble breathing or swallowing
  • Rashes or blisters that cover most of your body
  • Rash on your face or genitals
  • Swelling, especially if your eyelids swell shut
  • Much of your skin itches, or nothing seems to relieve the itching

Typically, poison ivy develops within a week of your contact with a poison ivy, oak, or sumac plant. The rash usually lasts from 10 days to 3 weeks. Common symptoms include itching, red streaks, small bumps or larger raised hives, or blisters that may leak fluid.

After you think you may have come into contact with poison ivy, it is recommended that you immediately rinse your skin with lukewarm, soapy water, wash your clothing, and wash any surfaces that may have the plant oil on it.

We know that red, itchy rashes are unpleasant and annoying. FastMed can provide the quick care that you need to get relief from poison ivy rashes in no time.
