Mycoplasma pneumonia is a common lung infection caused by the bacteria Mycoplasma pneumoniae. It is usually mild and can be treated with antibiotics, but can become more serious in some people. People under the age of 40 who work or live in crowded areas are more likely to get mycoplasma pneumonia. Infection normally occurs when a person comes into contact with the fluids from the nose or throat of someone who has it.

Symptoms:

Common symptoms of mycoplasma pneumonia include:

Diagnosis:

Your healthcare provider can determine whether or not you are infected by doing chest X-rays and other common tests such as blood tests. Treatment:

Mycoplasma pneumonia is usually treated with antibiotics, but most cases are mild and go away on their own. If you have been diagnosed with mycoplasma pneumonia, it is important follow your healthcare provider’s orders and get plenty of rest. Some people recover quickly and may be able to return to their normal routine within a week. Other people may need more time to recover. Speak with your provider about when is the best time for you to return to your normal daily activities.

Prevention:

You can prevent the spread of mycoplasma pneumonia by covering your mouth and nose with a tissue when you sneeze or cough. If you do not have a tissue, try to sneeze into your upper sleeve and not your hands. Wash your hands often with warm soap and water, and keep hand sanitizer available in case you can not easily wash your hands.
