Mycoplasma pneumonia is a common lung infection caused by the bacteria Mycoplasma pneumoniae. It is usually mild and can be treated with antibiotics, but can become more serious in some people. People under the age of 40 who work or live in crowded areas are more likely to get mycoplasma pneumonia. Infection normally occurs when a person comes into contact with the fluids from the nose or throat of someone who has it.

Common symptoms of mycoplasma pneumonia include:

Some people recover quickly and may be able to return to their normal routine within a week. Other people may need more time to recover. You can prevent the spread of mycoplasma pneumonia by covering your mouth and nose with a tissue when you sneeze or cough. If you do not have a tissue, try to sneeze into your upper sleeve and not your hands. Wash your hands often with warm soap and water, and keep hand sanitizer available in case you can not easily wash your hands.
