CMV drivers should take a DOT physical exam every 24 months to renew their DOT medical certificate. FastMed has numerous medical professionals who are certified to perform DOT physical exams and administer DOT medical certificates to CMV drivers.
What Should You Know About DOT Medical Certificates?
-
A CMV driver may only obtain a DOT medical certificate once a certified medical examiner decides he/she is healthy enough to perform the job safely.
-
According to DOT regulations, CMV Drivers should be evaluated by a certified medical examiner every 24 months. Without this physical exam, or without a DOT medical certificate, a CMV driver could be denied their CMV license.
-
There are numerous medical requirements that a CMV driver must meet in order to receive their DOT medical certificates. These requirements include, but are not limited to:
-
A negative drug test
-
Regular vitals including blood pressure and pulse
-
Unimpaired vision and hearing
-
Healthy blood sugar levels
-
Note: In some cases, a CMV driver requiring needle-injected insulin will not be eligible for a DOT medical certificate. However, diabetes controlled by diet may be permitted.
-
A medical professional must be certified to administer DOT medical certificates and must complete routine training every 5 years. On top of that, a medical professional must pass an exam every 10 years to stay certified.
-
To comply with the requirements of DOT medical certification, you should know where you will be using your CMV (Intrastate commerce vs. interstate commerce), as different requirements may apply. If you aren’t sure, this website can help.
-
Some companies will cover the cost of a DOT physical exam, while others will leave the financial responsibility to the drivers.
