Proxy Access in MyChart
In MyChart, you have the ability to view another individual’s (such as a family member) information. This is done by the other individual granting you proxy access to their MyChart. Once you have proxy access, you will have visibility into most of the other individual’s information.
At FastMed, active patients who are 18+ years old can invite people to have proxy access through MyChart.
Parents and legal guardians are automatically granted proxy access for their children under age 12. This can be accomplished by a front desk staff member at your next visit.

MyChart Accounts for Teens (ages 12-18)
When a FastMed patient turns 12, or a new FastMed MyChart account is created for a patient 12-18 years old, certain changes occur automatically in MyChart to comply with North Carolina law. These changes limit the level of proxy access a parent has to their teen child’s health information in MyChart. This is called restricted access.
While parents will continue to have access to some information (see MyChart Guide below), other details will no longer be visible. If the teen wishes the parent to have full access as they did previously, the teen can request “expanded access” for their parent.
Note that the parent will need a MyChart account linked to their teen child to see any information about the child.
Teen MyChart Guide
The information a parent has access to in a teen’s MyChart depends on the type of proxy access they have. The chart below shows what is accessible in MyChart at “restricted” and “expanded” access levels.

How to Grant or Revoke Proxy Access
Adults
An adult patient can grant or revoke proxy access to their own MyChart from the Sharing Hub inside MyChart. Watch the “Sharing Your Record – MyChart Patient Tutorial” video for details. You may also request changes to proxy access when visiting FastMed.
Teens
Teen patients may grant expanded access to their parent by completing a request form during a FastMed visit. Teens are not permitted to grant or revoke proxy access through MyChart.
If a teen previously granted a parent expanded access and later wishes to restrict that proxy access to some of their medical information (lab results, visit notes, appointment history, medications, etc.), they may revoke the expanded access. To do so, they would consult with their FastMed healthcare provider and have the access level changed at FastMed.
Signing up for a Teen MyChart
Teen patients will be provided an activation code to set up their MyChart at their first FastMed visit after turning 12. They will able to grant expanded proxy access to a parent at that same time.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do children have their own MyChart with their information?
Children under 12 don’t have MyChart with their own login. Parents can use their own MyChart to access their child’s medical information. When the child turns 12, they can have their own MyChart account. At that time, the information available automatically to parents is limited until the child grants expanded access.
As a parent, how do I connect my child’s medical records to my MyChart?
You can take care of this at your next visit to FastMed. Our staff will verify your identity and enable proxy access to your child’s record while you are there. If your child is 12 or older, our staff can also assist you and your child with enabling your expanded access.
Why does my access to my child’s medical information have to change?
This change is necessary to ensure FastMed complies with North Carolina law. State law establishes the right for minors to obtain some health care services confidentially and without parental consent, including reproductive health, mental health, and substance use.
Do I have to give my child permission to have a MyChart?
No. When a child turns 12, they are automatically eligible for a MyChart. They simply have to activate it in person at their next office visit. At that same time they will be able to grant expanded proxy access to their parent to allow for the same level of access to medical information as prior to turning 12.
As a teen, how can I give my parent full access to my medical information?
Any FastMed patient 12 or older can have their own MyChart. You can get that set up at your next visit to FastMed. Whether or not you have your own MyChart, you can grant your parent expanded proxy access. This will allow your parent access to all of your information. You can revoke this expanded access in the future by visiting FastMed and speaking with a member of your care team.
