Urinary tract infections are uncomfortable at best, and at worst, can cause permanent kidney damage if left untreated. A UTI is one of the most common bacterial infections in the United States, and nearly 1 in 3 women will have had at least one urinary tract infection by the time they reach 24 years of age. UTIs are caused by bacteria entering the urethra (the tube through which urine exits the body). Women are more likely than men to get urinary tract infections, partly because sexual intercourse introduces new bacteria into the body. Pregnancy, diabetes, and having a catheter in place can also increase the likelihood of getting a urinary tract infection.
So, how can you tell if you have a urinary tract infection? If you’ve had a UTI in the past, you’re more likely to get one in the future. Symptoms of a urinary tract infection include:
- Feeling a strong urge to urinate, but only passing small amounts of urine
- Painful or burning sensations during urination
- Urine that smells strongly or is cloudy, dark, or pink/red
- Pain in the lower abdomen
If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, you may have a urinary tract infection. Come to your local FastMed Urgent Care, where we’ll take a urine sample to quickly find out if you are suffering from a UTI. If you do have an infection, we’ll give you a prescription for an antibiotic. You should begin to feel better within one or two days of taking your medication.
Make sure that you take the full course of antibiotics, even if your symptoms go away. You’ll probably feel better quickly, but if you stop taking the antibiotics, the infection can return.
