Clayton, NC, October 29, 2014 – With Halloween just days away, FastMed Urgent Care, the largest urgent care network in North Carolina, has released its “Ten Tips for a Happy not Hair-Raising Halloween.” Following these simple steps before your ghouls and goblins take to the streets will help make this holiday safe and fun for children and adults alike.
“Halloween is a holiday children look forward to, and unfortunately one where we see an uptick in injuries that can quickly put a damper on the day. It’s even more imperative to be vigilant this year, since Halloween falls on a Friday and chances are your trick-or-treater will be out longer and later into the evening,” said Jason A. Williams, MPAS, Ph.D, FastMed Urgent Care’s CEO and President of the Eastern Region. “Taking a few simple precautions before your children head out will go a long way to minimize the moaning and groaning and maximize the shrieks of delight this Halloween.”
FastMed’s 10 Tips for a Happy, Not Hair-Raising, Halloween:
- Check costumes for length, color and fit. Costumes that are short and properly hemmed, have some reflective materials (reflective tape works in a pinch) and fit properly help to prevent tripping, increase nighttime visibility and won’t get caught on fences, branches or railings.
- Appropriate footwear is a must! Avoid heels and oversized shoes, to again, avoid tripping!
- Make sure costumes are flame retardant. It should indicate such right on the label.
- Arm them with a flashlight, and check the batteries before they head out.
- Leave the sword at home. Accessories that are sharp, pointed or too long can injure another trick-or-treater or your child, should they trip and fall.
- Masks should have large eyeholes and be breathable, and make sure the mask stays in place and doesn’t slip or slide and obstruct your child’s view.
- If using make-up or face paint, test it on a small area of skin a few days ahead of time, just to make sure it doesn’t cause an allergic reaction. Follow directions carefully and remove all make-up before putting your child to bed.
- All treat eating should be done at home, after an adult has checked the treats. Limit the candy intake, both on Halloween and in the days that follow.
- Throw away any treats that are unwrapped or appear suspicious. If you have any doubt, throw it out.
- An adult should accompany small children, and with older children agree to a curfew and set periodic check-in times with a phone call or text.
