Second generation FastMed Urgent Care family gets involved in healthcare on a global level

Clayton’s own Joy Guha volunteers and serves with Cusco, Peru Clinic Medical Team

July 21 – 2014 – Clayton, NC – This past June, Joy Guha, daughter of Dr. Wanda Godfrey, family practice provider at FastMed Urgent Care and Family Practice in Garner and Clayton, became a second generation overseas medical volunteer in Cusco, Peru.

Joy, now 19 years old, attended Clayton High School and was a graduate of the class of 2013. She was encouraged by her parents to join Maximo Nivel’s International Volunteer Medical Healthcare Program, a three week volunteer trip to support the local medical need in Peru through International Volunteer HQ. To support Joy’s volunteer work in Cusco, FastMed Urgent Care donated blood pressure cuffs, stethoscopes, masks, gloves, scrub tops and other medical supplies.

Joy learned that the need for medical practitioners in Cucso is great. During her time in Cusco a government clinic was on strike and was closed, causing even more residents to flood Maximo Nivel’s clinics. Joy worked along-side a team of 40 other volunteers including doctors, nurses and therapists as they traveled to rural communities outside of Cusco and setup 13 clinic stations to see over 200 people per day and provide residents general check-ups and physicals, vaccinations, IV treatment for dehydration and other illness and injury diagnosis and treatment.

“Volunteering in Peru reinforced the values that made me look towards the medical field, specifically infection disease, and a desire to learn about other cultures and their unique challenges,” said Guha. “This opportunity has also heightened my awareness of the global health disparity that makes contributions like FastMed’s so influential.”

Joy is attending NC State University in the fall, with a concentration in biology studies and hopes to pursue a calling in healthcare.

“It is part of our culture at FastMed to give back, contribute and be actively involved in our communities and care about others, and we are proud of the promising future she is shaping for herself in making a difference.  I was involved in mission work as part of Methodist Universities Mission activities in Peru in 1994 and know how important this is to molding Joy’s perspectives on servant leadership and to helping those she served” said FastMed Urgent Care’s Founder, CEO and President of the Eastern Region, Jason A. Williams.

Máximo Nivel was founded in Cusco, Peru in 2003, and provides volunteers the opportunity help serve, teach and build Latin American communities by supporting their orphanages, childcare, medical clinics, schools, local businesses, and construction. For more information visit www.maximonivel.com.
