According to the FMCSA, a CMV driver must maintain a DOT medical certificate to keep their CMV license. Part of maintaining a DOT medical certificate is getting a DOT physical exam every 24 months, or as advised by a medical examiner. During the DOT physical exam, the medical examiner may complete a DOT physical form to track your health and determine whether or not you are eligible to receive a DOT medical certificate.

What Does the DOT Physical Form Involve?

Vision Test

  • The vision portion of the exam will test your acuity and horizontal field of vision. If you wear corrective lenses or contacts they should be worn during the vision portion of the exam. Drivers with monocular vision may not be qualified.

Hearing Test

  • An audiometer or forced whisper test may be used to gauge a driver’s hearing.

Blood Pressure Measurement

  • A medical examiner may take multiple readings to confirm blood pressure. If a medical examiner feels that a driver’s blood pressure needs to be monitored, the DOT medical certificate may expire before the regular 24 month period.

Laboratory Tests

  • This may include a drug screening. However, other findings such as protein, blood, or sugar in the urine could require extra testing to ensure no other serious medical problems exist, as decided by the medical examiner.
